Truth, Reflection, and Our Shared Responsibility

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an incredibly important day to take the opportunity to pause, reflect, and listen. It is a day to honour the children who never returned home. A day to acknowledge the Survivors of residential schools. A day to reflect on the families, and the Indigenous communities who continue to carry the impacts of these injustices today.
While no words can undo the pain that was caused, we each have a responsibility to, at the very least, learn, acknowledge the truth, and contribute to a future built on respect, understanding, and reconciliation.
As a parent, this day carries additional meaning for me. When I look at my children, I cannot help but think about the children whose lives were forever changed by residential schools and the families who were robbed of precious moments together.
The day serves as a powerful reminder that every child deserves to grow up feeling safe, valued, connected to their family and culture, and surrounded by people who care deeply about them and their wellbeing.
I am grateful that my children are being raised in a world where these conversations are becoming more open and more honest. My hope is that they grow up understanding the importance of empathy, inclusion, and respect for all people. I want them to appreciate the diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives that shape our communities and to recognize that kindness and understanding are not just values we talk about, but values we actively demonstrate through our actions.
Today, I encourage everyone to take time to listen, learn, and reflect.
Reconciliation is not a single day on the calendar. It is an ongoing commitment to building stronger relationships, confronting difficult truths, and creating a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
If we can raise the next generation to be compassionate, curious, and appreciative of one another, then we take another meaningful step toward the kind and inclusive world we all want to leave behind.
