Policy is Not a Shield

Policy is not a shield. I am not the first person to say this.
It sets expectations, but it cannot replace judgment, communication, even accountability. A written rule does not solve problems, prevent misconducts, or guarantee legal protection.
Policies must evolve. They are living documents that require updates, context, and interpretation. But, even the best policy fails if its purpose is not understood or practiced. The real work is in explaining intent, training people to apply it, and ensuring leaders actually lead by example.
In legal settings, policy alone does not guarantee. Courts look at actions, not so much policy manuals. Companies that hide behind policy instead of demonstrating good judgment, and consistent application can pay for it, including financially and culturally.
Early in my HR career, I treated policy as more black and white. I learned quickly that policy is guidance, not immunity. It supports decisions. Strong organizations understand that policy creates clarity, not immunity. We need to look beyond policy when dealing with matters.
