Not All Holiday Stories Sparkle. Lead With Empathy for the Ones Who Dim

The holiday season is beautiful for many. It is also brutal for others.
From my experience both in HR and in the non‑profit and mental health world, I have seen both truths up close.
You see the joy, the connection, the celebrations. And, you also see the people who quietly disappear from conversations, who dread the calendar turning to December, who carry grief, loneliness, or exhaustion into rooms filled with happiness.
This time of year can amplify whatever someone is already holding. For those without a support system, it can feel like the world is celebrating without them.
So as we move through the season, I am mindful to especially lead with empathy and understanding. Check in on the colleague who has been quieter than usual. Offer grace to those who show little patience. Remember that not everyone has a warm home to return to, or a family waiting, or a place where they feel seen and heard.
Small acts of humanity matter more than we think. That can simply be: a message, a moment of presence, even a bit of shown understanding. These things cost nothing, yet they can mean everything.
If this season is joyful for you, I am glad. If it's painful, please remember you are loved and cared for. And, if you are supporting others through it, whether that is in HR, in the community, in mental health, in any role really, thank you for holding significance in a world that desperately needs it.
I shall move through the holidays with intention, empathy, and even more room for each other.
