Elder Abuse Day

Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) I am taking a moment to reflect on the responsibility we all share to protect, and uplift older adults in our communities. Elder abuse is not always visible, I would even argue quite hidden.

This is a reminder that how we treat older adults says a lot about who we are as a society. Many of us have parents, grandparents, neighbours, or clients who rely on us. Some are strong and independent. Others are vulnerable in ways we may not see.

Elder abuse can be financial, emotional, physical, or simply neglect. What is most heartbreaking is that most cases go unreported. Often because the person suffering feels afraid, ashamed, or unheard

Elder abuse can happen quietly. It can happen anywhere. And, it can happen to anyone.

Today I am choosing to honour the older adults who shaped us, the ones who built our communities, raised families, and paved the way for the opportunities we enjoy.

If you have an older adult in your life, reach out. Ask how they are doing; listen without rushing or judgment; your presence might be exactly what they need.
